THIS SERVICE CAN BE HEARD AT - 0113 467 8156

Introduction by Fiona Sinclair (Eddleston)
Played by Anne Derrick

Today is the 9th August and the Tenth Sunday after Pentecost. As the bells of Peebles Old Parish Church ring out in welcome, in our own homes or elsewhere we come together in worship.

Our gospel story today is about events by the Sea of Galilee, which bring back to us memories too of a hit musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber.

Hymn: When Morning Gilds the Skies

PRAYER

Said by Rev John Smith

Through the storms of life, O God, you are with your people
In the person of Jesus your Son.
Calm our fears and strengthen our faith
That we may never doubt his presence among us
But proclaim that he is your Son,
Risen from the dead, living for ever and ever.     Amen

THE LORD’S PRAYER

LESSON

Read by Cathy Davidson

Matthew 14:22-33

Immediately he made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead
to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. And after he had
dismissed the crowds, he went up the mountain by himself to pray.
When evening came, he was there alone, but by this time the boat,
battered by the waves, was far from the land, for the wind was
against them.
And early in the morning he came walking toward them on the sea.
But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were
terrified, saying, "It is a ghost!" And they cried out in fear.
But immediately Jesus spoke to them and said, "Take heart, it is I; do
not be afraid."
Peter answered him, "Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you
on the water."
He said, "Come." So Peter got out of the boat, started walking on the
water, and came toward Jesus.
But when he noticed the strong wind, he became frightened, and
beginning to sink, he cried out, "Lord, save me!"
Jesus immediately reached out his hand and caught him, saying to
him, "You of little faith, why did you doubt?"
When they got into the boat, the wind ceased.
And those in the boat worshipped him, saying, "Truly you are the Son
of God."

Hymn: Just as I am

PRAYER

Said by Rev John Smith

We praise your abiding guidance, O God,
for you sent us Jesus, our Teacher and Messiah,
to model for us the way of love for the whole universe.
We offer these prayers of love
on behalf of ourselves and our neighbours,
on behalf of your creation and our fellow creatures.
Loving God,
open our ears to hear your word
and draw us closer to you,
that the whole world may be one with you
as you are one with us in Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

PRAYER IN TIME OF CRISIS
Lord Jesus,
In the midst of a storm,
You said, ‘Peace be still.’
Bid our anxious fears subside,
Sustain your church in faith, hope and love,
Bring our nation, and our world through this tumult, Grant wisdom to those with heavy responsibilities, And healing and hope to those who are infected.

Amen.

BENEDICTION

Eternal God,
you are present with us throughout our lives,
even when others plot to do us harm.
May we learn to live together in unity,
that in all we do,
we may sing your praises now and forever. Amen.
And the blessing of God, Father. Son and Holy Spirit be with us, this day
and in all the days to come.

AMEN
