Introduction by Mary Wight (St Peter's)

Today is the 23rd August and the Twelfth Sunday after Pentecost. As the bells of Peebles Old Parish Church ring out in welcome in our homes, or elsewhere, we come together in worship.

Our Gospel story today is about Jesus and the disciples, gathered together at Caesarea Philippi, where Jesus questions them as to who they think he is.

Twelfth Sunday After Pentecost

Jesus and his disciples at Caesarea Philippi

Hymn: A Mighty Fortress is our God

PRAYER

Said by the Very Reverend Dr. Finlay Macdonald

God, our rock and our salvation, our shelter and strong tower, reassuring presence in trouble and distress, accept the worship we offer this day; hear our prayer and grant us your grace and guidance for the living of our lives in service of the Lord Jesus Christ;

Lord, for your tender mercies’ sake lay not our sins to our charge, but forgive what is past and give us grace to amend our sinful lives; to decline from sin and incline to virtue, that we may walk with a perfect heart before you now and evermore.   Amen

THE LORD’S PRAYER

LESSON

Read by David Dickson (Eddleston)

St Matthew 16: 13-20

Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” And they said, “Some say John the Baptist, but others Elijah, and still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets?” He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?" Simon Peter answered him, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the Living God.” And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon, Son of Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father in heaven. And I tell you, you are Peter and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.” Then he sternly ordered the disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Messiah.

REFLECTION

By the Very Reverend Dr. Finlay Macdonald

Hymn: In God My Hope

PRAYER

Said by the Very Reverend Dr. Finlay Mcdonald

Gracious God, for your precious gifts of faith, hope and love we give you thanks, strengthen our faith when doubts arise, confirm our hope when tempted to despair, re-kindle our love for you and for one another in face of disappointment and doubt that all things indeed work together for good to those love God.

Amen.

PRAYER IN TIME OF CRISIS
Lord Jesus,
In the midst of a storm,
You said, ‘Peace be still.’
Bid our anxious fears subside,
Sustain your church in faith, hope and love,
Bring our nation, and our world through this tumult, Grant wisdom to those with heavy responsibilities, And healing and hope to those who are infected. Through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Hymn: All my hope on God is founded

BENEDICTION

O God, the living God, who has given us a living hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead; Grant that we, being risen with him, may seek the things which are above, and be made partakers of the life eternal; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord

Go in peace and the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with us all evermore.

AMEN
