Introduction by Chris Nicoll

Good morning.

This is the 18th October and the twentieth
Sunday after Pentecost.

It’s a long time since we were able to be meeting in church - but we are delighted that very nearly 100 people per week join us online or by phone, worshipping and praising God, and praying to him for our world, our nation, and our community in these challenging and worrying times.

The theme is centered around the story of
when Pharisees came with a trick question to trap Jesus.

Twentieth Sunday After Pentecost

HYMN: All people that on earth do dwell

PRAYER

Read by Rev John Smith

Living lord,
Fill us with holy love;
Open to us treasures of your wisdom;
Encourage what you have begun in us,
And prompt us to ask in prayer
What your spirit already desires for us.

Turn your face to us and show us your glory:
Then shall our longing be satisfied,
And our life complete.

Give us knowledge of your will
Strength of spirit to follow Christ’s teaching,
And courage to face the complexities of life.
May we truly serve your Son, Christ Jesus our Lord,

In whose words we pray….

THE LORD'S PRAYER

LESSON

Read by Marion Henthorn
Matthew 22:15-22

Paying the Imperial Tax to Caesar

Then the Pharisees went out and laid plans to trap him in his words. They sent their disciples to him along with the Herodians. “Teacher,” they said, “we know that you are a man of integrity and that you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. You aren’t swayed by others, because you pay no attention to who they are. Tell us then, what is your opinion? Is it right to pay the imperial tax to Caesar or not?”

But Jesus, knowing their evil intent, said, “You hypocrites, why are you trying to trap me? Show me the coin used for paying the tax.” They brought him a denarius, and he asked them, “Whose image is this? And whose inscription?” “Caesar’s,” they replied.

Then he said to them, “So give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.”

When they heard this, they were amazed. So they left him and went away.

PRAYER

Said by Rev John Smith

Loving God,
Remember your Church on earth
Enable Christian people
To walk with Christ in their daily lives
And to work for the coming of his kingdom.

Strengthen the witness of the Church
In this parish and in every place,
The the world may learn to live your truth
And seek your peace.

Remember the nations of the world.
Bring to an end all war and strife;
Break down the barriers of race and creed,
That all may life as members of
One family of God.

PRAYER IN TIME OF CRISIS

Lord Jesus,  In the midst of a storm, You said, ‘Peace, be still’.
Bid our anxious fears subside, Sustain your church in faith, hope and love.
Bring our nation, and our world through this tumult.
Grant wisdom to those with heavy responsibilities, And healing and hope to all those who are infected.
Amen.

HYMN: One more step along the world I go

BENEDICTION

Said by Rev John Smith

May God shield you in the valleys
May Christ aid you on the mountains
May the Holy Spirit bathe you on the slopes
In hollow, on hill, on plain,
Mountain, valley and plain.

And the Blessing of God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit be with you this day, and in all the days to come. Amen.
