Introduction by Margaret Ireland

The Season of Easter lasts for 7 weeks, all the way to Pentecost.  During it, we think of the various post-Resurrection appearances of Jesus.

So during this time, our church bells remind us that we are still engaged with the Easter story.

Seventh Sunday in Easter

also known as Ascension Sunday

PRAYER

Said by Rev John Smith

Let us pray

On this day of Ascension as we watch and wait for Jesus' return. Father in heaven, our minds were prepared for the coming of your kingdom. Then you took Christ beyond our sight so that we might seek him in glory.

May we follow where he has led and find our hope in his glory, for he is Lord forever.

Amen

LESSON

Read by Jeanette Cameron

Acts 1:6-14

Then they gathered around him and asked him, “Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?”

He said to them: “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight.

They were looking intently up into the sky as he was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them. “Men of Galilee,” they said, “why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven.”

Then the apostles returned to Jerusalem from the hill called the Mount of Olives, a Sabbath day’s walk from the city.  When they arrived, they went upstairs to the room where they were staying.

Those present were Peter, John, James and Andrew; Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew; James son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of James. They all joined together constantly in prayer, along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers

REFLECTION

PRAYER

Said by Rev John Smith

Prayer in time of crisis

Lord Jesus,
In the midst of a storm,
You said, ‘Peace be still.’
Bid our anxious fears subside,
Sustain your church in faith, hope and love,
Bring our nation, and our world through this tumult,
Grant wisdom to those with heavy responsibilities,
And healing and hope to those who are infected.
Amen.

Hymn: Alleluia, sing to Jesus

BENEDICTION

Given by Rev John Smith

As you go from here, remember this:

The same power that raised Jesus Christ from the dead and placed all things under his authority— this same power is at work within you and in all who believe.

And the blessing of God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit be with you. This day and in all the days to come.

Amen
