Introduction by Cathy Davidson (Peebles Old)

The message from the bells of the Old Parish Church in Peebles is welcome as you join us for our
online worship. So from the people of the Old Parish, and our friends in Eddleston, Stobo and
Drumelzier - “we are very glad you have been able to be part of today’s worship.”

The theme today explores the majesty of God ’s creative power. In the Book of Job - in
beautifully poetic language - we shall hear the author speak of how “the morning stars sang
together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy.”

We thank all those who are taking apart in today’s service.

When the bells finish we can join with those singing “Immortal, invisible, God only wise!” And
today’s closing voluntary comes from Eddleston Parish Church organ, played by Andrew
Henthorn.

HYMN: Immortal, invisible, God only wise

12th Sunday after Pentecost

PRAYER

Said by Rev John Smith

Lord God,
the wonders of your creation the splendour of the heavens,
the beauty of the earth,
the order and richness of nature all speak to us of your glory,
and remind us too of our sacred charge to care for and protect
your creation.

The coming of your Son,
the presence of your Spirit,
the fellowship of your Church,
show us the marvel of your love.
We worship and adore you God of grace and glory.
through Jesus Christ our Lord.

God of mercy, God of love in humbleness of heart we confess
our sins.
We forget to love and serve you and wander from your ways.

Merciful God,
forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life,
through Jesus Christ,
your son, Our SAVIOUR.

Amen

LESSON

Read by Geoff Goldstraw (Peebles Old)

Job 38;1-11

Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind:
"Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge?
Gird up your loins like a man, I will question you, and you shall declare to me.
Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell me, if you have
understanding.
Who determined its measurements--surely you know! Or who stretched the line
upon it?
On what were its bases sunk, or who laid its cornerstone
when the morning stars sang together and all the heavenly beings shouted for joy?
Or who shut in the sea with doors when it burst out from the womb?--
when I made the clouds its garment, and thick darkness its swaddling band,
and prescribed bounds for it, and set bars and doors,
and said, 'Thus far shall you come, and no farther, and here shall your proud
waves be stopped'?

Mark 4; 35-41

On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, "Let us go across to the
other side."
And leaving the crowd behind, they took him with them in the boat, just as he
was. Other boats were with him.
A great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that the boat was
already being swamped.
But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; and they woke him up and said
to him, "Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?"
He woke up and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, "Peace! Be still!" Then
the wind ceased, and there was a dead calm.
He said to them, "Why are you afraid? Have you still no faith?"
And they were filled with great awe and said to one another, "Who then is this,
that even the wind and the sea obey him?"

HYMN: How shall I sing that majesty?

Reflection

PRAYER

Said by Rev John Smith

We lift our prayers to you, O Lord, for all people everywhere, those
close to us and those far away.

Creator God look with compassion on the whole human family; take
away arrogance and hatred that infects the hearts of those who
pursue violence and terrorism; break down the walls that separate
us; unite us in bonds of love and peace.

We pray today for peacemakers throughout the world, may they
bring hope out of despair, peace out of conflict and prosperity out of
poverty.
Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer.

Father God we pray for our families and friends and especially for
young people that they may grow up knowing love and hope,
valuing life and respecting others. We pray for all young people,
stressed by the implications of the Covid Pandemic. We pray for
those who are about to leave school and move on to the next stage
in their lives, and for those for whom what happens next depends
on exam or assessment performance.
Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer.

Merciful God we pray for all who suffer in body, mind or spirit and
for those who care for them. We pray for the sick especially for
those who like St Paul have been given “a thorn in the flesh”.
We pray for any who are in special need of our prayers at this time,
especially those known personally to us. We raise them now before
you ….
Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer.

Heavenly Father, we pray for those whose hearts have been
saddened by the death of someone close and dear to them, for
members of our families who have died and whose anniversary we
recall. Help us to experience the comfort of the Holy Spirit within us,
and the fellowship of the church family around us until we are
reunited once more in your heavenly kingdom.
Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer.

Faithful God we pray for ourselves; as we move on from our
worship today to start the week ahead, we ask that in all we do, we
may walk more closely with you at our side safe in the knowledge
that your Fatherly love and care knows no bounds.

Amen

Hymn: Now thank we all our God

THE BLESSING and BENEDICTION

Said by Rev John Smith

May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another,
in accord with Christ Jesus, that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our
Lord Jesus Christ.

And the blessing of God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit be with you this day, and in all the days to come.
AMEN.
