THIS SERVICE CAN BE HEARD AT - 0113 467 8156

Introduction by Alastair Robertson)
Played by Anne Derrick

Today is the 19th July, and it is the seventh Sunday after Pentecost. The bells of the Old Parish Church of Peebles ring out to welcome you to worship today.
Our service is led by Revd John Smith. The bells are ringing out the hymn tune “Sursum Corda” which is often sung to that amazing and powerful Psalm 139 - paraphrased by Ian Pitt-Watson. “You are before me God, you are behind”. And this is the theme of our worship today.

PRAYER

Said by Rev John Smith

Dear Lord, You have brought us to the beginning of a new
day. As the world is renewed fresh and clean, so we ask You
to renew our hearts with Your strength and purpose.

Forgive us the errors of yesterday and bless us to walk closer in
Your way today. This is the day we begin our lives anew;
shine through us so that every person we meet may feel
Your presence in us.

Take our hands, precious Lord for we
cannot make it by ourselves.

THE LORD’S PRAYER

LESSON

Read by Isabelle Coghill

PSALM 139 :1-12, 23-24

O Lord, thou hast searched me, and known me.
Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou
understandest my thought afar off.
Thou compassest my path and my lying down, and art acquainted
with all my ways.
For there is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O Lord, thou knowest
it altogether.
Thou hast beset me behind and before, and laid thine hand upon
me.
Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high, I cannot attain
unto it.
Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy
presence?
If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell,
behold, thou art there.
If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of
the sea;
Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold
me.
If I say, Surely the darkness shall cover me; even the night shall be
light about me.
I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made:
marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.
Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my
thoughts:
And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way
everlasting.

PRAYER

Said by Rev John Smith

Loving Father, we don’t understand how this can be, but we praise your wonderful name for that you are with us every step of the way, every moment of our day and we thank you in Jesus’ name,

Amen.

“Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off.”
(Psalm 139:2)

In our weakness, you are our strength;
In our darkness, light’
In our sorrows, comfort and peace.
From everlasting to everlasting
You are our God
Father, Son and Holy Spirit,
One God, glorified for ever.

Amen.

PRAYER IN TIME OF CRISIS
Lord Jesus,
In the midst of a storm,
You said, ‘Peace be still.’
Bid our anxious fears subside,
Sustain your church in faith, hope and love,
Bring our nation, and our world through this tumult, Grant wisdom to those with heavy responsibilities, And healing and hope to those who are infected.

Amen.

BENEDICTION

God’s blessing be yours.
And well may it befall you;
Christ’s blessing be yours, and well may you be treated;
The Spirit’s blessing be yours,
And well may you spend your lives
Each day that you rise up,
Each night that you lie down.
Amen.
