THIS SERVICE CAN BE HEARD AT - 0113 467 8156

Introduction by David Dickson (Eddleston)
Played by Anne Derrick

The Bells of the Old Parish Church of Peebles ring out to welcome you to the church family. Worshipping together in heart andspirit, even if having to sit at home to do so in these strange times.

This morning we will be travelling back to the year 539 BCE, to hear what happened to bring an end to the Jewish Exile in Babylon - and discovering how that could speak to us two-and-a-half millennia later, in the light of our knowledge of God through his son, Jesus.

Sixth Sunday After Pentecost

The people in exile

Hymn: Come, let us to the Lord our God

PRAYER

Said by Rev John Smith

Spirit of life and gentleness
Shed abroad in our hearts
The cheering light of your grace.

You know our faults,
Our failings, the dullness of our understanding.

The waywardness of our affections, the perverseness of our will.
When we neglect to practise what we know,
Visit us with your grace.

Enlighten our minds, correct our wanderings,
So that guided by your grace,
We may be preserved from making a shipwreck of our faith.
At length may we be landed safe
In the haven of eternal rest.
Through Jesus Christ our Lord.

THE LORD’S PRAYER

LESSON

Read by Fiona Fleming

Isaiah 55

8 For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
neither are your ways my ways,”
declares the Lord.
9 As the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are my ways higher than your ways
and my thoughts than your thoughts.
10 As the rain and the snow
come down from heaven,
and do not return to it
without watering the earth
and making it bud and flourish,
so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater,
11 so is my word that goes out from my mouth:
It will not return to me empty,
but will accomplish what I desire
and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.
12 You will go out in joy
and be led forth in peace;
the mountains and hills
will burst into song before you,
and all the trees of the field
will clap their hands.
13 Instead of the thornbush will grow the juniper,
and instead of briers the myrtle will grow.
This will be for the Lord’s renown,
for an everlasting sign,
that will endure forever.”

Hymn: You shall go out with joy.

REFLECTION:

by Rev John Smith

Hymn: Come, thou long expected Jesus

PRAYER

Said by Rev John Smith

God of light and love,
In your tender compassion you sent your Son
To shine on those who sit in darkness
And to guide our way into the way of peace.

Give us a straight path to follow,
That we may neither stumble not fall.

Guide us, Lord, in all our doings with your gracious favour,
And further us with your continual help;
That in all our works,
Begun, continued, and ended in you,
We may glorify your holy name,
And by your mercy attain everlasting life.

Through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen

PRAYER IN TIME OF CRISIS
Lord Jesus,
In the midst of a storm,
You said, ‘Peace be still.’
Bid our anxious fears subside,
Sustain your church in faith, hope and love,
Bring our nation, and our world through this tumult, Grant wisdom to those with heavy responsibilities, And healing and hope to those who are infected.

Amen.

BENEDICTION

God’s blessing be yours,
And well may if befall you;
Christ’s blessing be yours,
And well may you be treated;
The Spirit’s blessing be yours,
And well may you spend your lives,
Each day that you rise up,
Each night that you lie down.

AMEN

Voluntary

thank you for the service - but to use BCE instead of BC avoids the name of Christ. How can that be to sidestep Jesus' name?
